Room Update

I was asked to update two rooms in a Grade II listed cottage, blending a modern refresh with the property’s historic charm. I managed the entire Listed Building Consent process, ensuring all updates complied with regulations.

The design carefully balanced contemporary style with the cottage’s timeless character, creating spaces that are both visually appealing and practical. Future-proofing was a key consideration, with accessible and adaptable features thoughtfully incorporated.

The second room required special attention, as my client had recently experienced a stroke and needed the space to feel familiar and reassuring. She was keen to retain her cherished desk and chair, where she often spent time relaxing, and we made sure these central pieces remained integral to the room.

To refresh the space, we selected a soft new paint colour, added Roman blinds in a fabulous print, and even incorporated a meaningful design element to represent her much-missed sister, who had moved abroad years earlier. The result is a space of comfortable familiarity that feels both renewed and deeply personal.

In the main sitting room, we chose to reupholster the existing sofas, as nothing matched their exceptional quality or comfort. This sustainable approach refreshed the furniture while reducing waste and enhancing the room’s updated aesthetic. I was also asked to find a bold piece of modern art for this room and ended up commissioning a striking piece from a local artist. My clients were thrilled with the result, which brought a unique and personal focal point to the space.

The final design achieved a perfect balance of functionality, heritage, and deeply personal touches, creating spaces that are both practical and meaningful.
